Halloween Magic with Red Cabbage

  • Red cabbage
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • Lemon juice
  • Vinegar

Get ready to discover the magic in red cabbage! Join Park Street Education as they use acids and bases with red cabbage juice (a naturally occurring pH indicator) to create some magical chemical reactions. Remember, the more acidic a substance, the more pink the solution. Test it out with different cooking substances in your kitchen and let us know what you discover. And of course, don’t forget to say the magical words.

  1. Cut up half of the cabbage into 2” pieces and boil in about 1L of water
  2. Drain cabbage juice and fill 4 small containers with 1/2 cup of juice
  3. Add a teaspoon of each substance to its designated container to see the reactions
