Mason Jar Aquarium

  • 1 jar per child
  • Blue food colouring
  • Filtered water
  • Plastic fish and plants
  • Pebbles
  • Glitter

Mini aquariums are fun to build, easy to make and look great on your child's desk or bookshelf. Turn it into an activity for the two of you and build a custom 'undersea' world together. Add your child's favourite small action figures (e.g. Star Wars characters, sunken ships, mermaids) colourful plastic fish, pebbles and foliage. Brighten your underwater world by adding red, green, blue or yellow food colouring to your mason-jar-turned-aquarium.

Activity best paired with the Finding Nemo soundtrack.

Instructions

Step 1. Add rocks, plants to your mason jar.

Step 2. Fill with water and add some plastic sea creatures.

Step 3. Add some blue food coloring until you are satisfied with the color.

Step 4. Add glitter if using.

Step 5. Add a few drops of glycerin more if you want the water to flow mores slowly and look more viscous.

Step 6. Screw lid shut (at this point you can also glue the lid with some hot glue if you'd like).

Gently swirl to see your sea creatures swim!
