Tin Can Pumpkin Project

What you need:

  • Empty & cleaned tin cans, with the labels peeled off
  • Acrylic or enamel paints - multiple colours
  • Foam Brushes or paint brushes
  • Black sharpies
  • Modge Podge or spray shellac

Getting ready for your at home Halloween? Now is the time to think about your Halloween decorations and crafts for the season. Here is a great craft to use recycled tin cans to  create fun tin can pumpkins.

How to create:

  • Step 1: Begin by cleaning your tin cans and peeling all the paper off – don’t worry if there is some glue residue – usually this is only a “strip” at the back of the can and you can make sure that this is “into the back” of your final Halloween design.

NOTE: make sure that the edge of the tops of the cans are smooth and safe. Sand paper can be used to file them down for smoothness and/or you can use scotch tape or duct tape to ensure the can is safe for children to use for crafting.

  • Step 2: Paint your cans in your base colour, Orange for Pumpkins.

NOTE: Depending on the type of paint you use, more than one coat may be required to have desired colour on the can.

  • Step 3: Using your black sharpie you can design the 'face' you would like your pumpkin to have and once you have done that use the brush to paint in the black facial features for your pumpkin.

NOTE: You can also use black construction paper and cut out facial features and use glue to adhere them to your tin.

  • Step 4: Once your cans are completely dry and the paint has set you can finalize the project with this step. This step is optional, but it will help the longevity of your tin can pumpkin. You can use either a brush on modge podge or a spray sealer shallac to seal in your project. If you are using a spray, please ensure you have proper ventilation to spray the can surface.

You can decorate your home, either inside or outside on your porch or stairs.

You can put candy for your children in these cans and decorate your table for your at home Halloween party. The ideas are endless.
