Making your own Italian Ice

What you need:

  • 3 cups of halved strawberries orchopped pineapple
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

*you can use any fresh fruit for this easy to make treat: lemon, cherry, orange, watermelon, raspberry, mango, and blackberry,

What is Italian Ice? It is a frozen dessert that is similar to a sorbet or snow cone, but not ice cream as it does not contain dairy. The Italian origin is from Sicily where they created "granita" which is made from sugar, water and various fresh flavours.

How to assemble:

  • Blend the fruit, sugar, honey and lemon juice with 2 cups ice in a food processor or blender until chunky. Add another 1 cup ice and blend until completely smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow baking dish and freeze 30 minutes. Scrape the ice with a fork until slushy, then freeze until firm, about 2 more hours. Scoop into paper cups.

NOTE: it is important not to miss step 2 about scraping the ice every 30 minutes. That is what gives it the texture required for the finished product.
